Norway has a new monarch. Haakon VIII has ascended to the throne following the death of his father, King Harald V, according to reports from CartaCapital and other outlets. The transition marks the end of Harald V’s long reign and the beginning of a new era for the Norwegian royal family.
Haakon VIII delivered his first speech to the nation shortly after taking the throne, using the address to pay tribute to his predecessor, as reported by R7. The new king’s accession was widely covered across international media, with Estadão noting that thousands of Norwegians gathered to bid farewell to Harald V as the country entered a fresh chapter in its monarchy.
The succession was not without its own dynamics. Haakon VIII is the younger sibling of Princess Märtha Louise, who, despite being older, will not become queen. According to BBC reporting, Märtha Louise, who has publicly identified as clairvoyant and is married to a shaman, remains outside the line of succession due to Norway’s male-preference primogeniture rules, which favor her brother.
